This was originally a painting, which I came across in a book full of WWII aviation artwork-I thought I'd try to draw it.
Everything's pretty true to the painting, except the countryside below is quite different, and the location of various debris varies a bit differently than in the painting-but I don't think that matters in the end.
The story behind this scene is actually a true one! A German Ace's guns jammed on his Me 109 but he didn't want to let the American Ace get away, so he managed to literally chop off his tail section. Both pilots got to the ground safely (the American bailed and the German crash landed), survived the war, AND they became good friends after the war!

Very cool dude. I just came across this while searching for the actual painting. The German pilot was my Uncle. His name was Hubert Heckmann.
